Sun Safety in the Tropics: A Practical Guide

Sun Safety in the Tropics: A Practical Guide

The sun in Palawan is sneaky. There's a constant sea breeze and the excitement of island-hopping, and both of those make it easy to forget you're basically standing right under the equator, with UV levels that stay high even when it's cloudy. Sunburn here doesn't really announce itself either. By the time your skin feels hot, the damage is already done.

Why El Nido's sun catches people off guard

A few things stack together here in a way that doesn't really happen at most beach destinations.

  • You're often on or near water for hours. Water and light-colored sand bounce a surprising amount of extra UV back onto skin that's already exposed.
  • Boat rides feel cool. The wind across the water hides just how much sun you're actually getting, so people underestimate how long they've been out.
  • The sun sits more directly overhead than it does at higher latitudes, which is part of why it burns faster than the sun "back home" ever seemed to.

A simple sun-safety routine

  • Put sunscreen on before you leave, not once you're already on the boat. It needs about 15 to 20 minutes to bind to your skin, so applying it as the boat pulls away means the first stretch is unprotected.
  • Reapply every two hours, and again right after swimming, even with a "water-resistant" formula.
  • Don't forget the parts people always miss: the back of your neck, your ears, the tops of your feet, and your part if you're not wearing a hat.
  • A rash guard or light long-sleeve layer blocks a lot more UV than sunscreen alone, especially on a multi-hour tour.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen (mineral-based, without oxybenzone or octinoxate) is worth looking for, since several of El Nido's lagoons and reefs are shared swimming spots with real coral, and reef-safe formulas are easy enough to find at local shops now.

If you do get burnt

Aloe vera (sold fresh at some local markets, or as a gel), cool showers, and staying extra hydrated all help take the edge off. If you'd rather have someone else handle it, H Signature Spa's Sun & Sea Recovery treatment (₱1,600 for 60 minutes, ₱2,200 for 90) uses a cooling gel and aloe vera to calm sunburned skin and ease heat stress. Their Main Branch is on Rizal St, El Nido, 5313 Palawan (map), open daily 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Check hsignaturespa.com/branch-main for current details.

A burn that blisters, covers a large area, or comes with fever or chills is worth getting looked at by a pharmacist or doctor rather than just managing at home. That's past the point of ordinary sunburn care.

FAQ

Do I really need sunscreen on a cloudy day?

Yes. UV rays pass through cloud cover more than most people expect, and El Nido's near-equatorial sun makes this especially true. Overcast doesn't mean safe.

What SPF should I use?

SPF 30 or higher is a reasonable baseline, reapplied often. Reef-safe, mineral-based formulas (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are the better choice here since you'll likely be swimming near coral.

How long can I actually be out before I need to reapply?

Roughly two hours under normal conditions, less if you've been swimming or sweating heavily. When in doubt, reapply sooner rather than later.

Is a sunburn treatment like Sun & Sea Recovery a substitute for seeing a doctor?

No. It's genuinely helpful for calming everyday sunburn discomfort, but it's not a medical treatment. Severe burns still need a professional.

Before you go

A good sunscreen habit is one of those things that's easy to skip on day one and painful to regret by day three. Get it right from the first morning, and the rest of the trip goes a lot more smoothly.

This is general sun-safety information, not medical advice. If you're on medication that increases photosensitivity, or have a skin condition, check with a doctor or pharmacist before your trip.
